2
Vehicle with 12-volt vehicle battery that
is supplying power and jump-starting
the other vehicle.
3
Suitable earth connection: preferably
the jump lea
d connection point (earth
connection), a solid metal part which is
securely bolted onto the cylinder block,
or the cylinder block itself.
The jump leads should be connected only
in the order A – B – C – D → Fig. 186.
T
he black jump lead should never be con-
nected to the negative terminal (–) on the
12-volt vehicle battery. Connecting the lead
to the negative terminal can cause incor-
rect condition evaluation of the 12-volt ve-
hicle battery in the vehicle electronics.
1. Switch o the ignition in both vehicles
→ page 140.
2. Remove the cover from the positive ter-
minal on the 12-volt vehicle battery
→ Fig. 186
1 → .
3.
Connect one end of the red jump lead A
to the positive terminal + of the battery
on the vehicle with the discharged 12-
volt vehicle battery.
4. Connect the other end of the red jump
lead B to the positive terminal + of the
vehicle battery providing assistance
→ Fig. 186
2 .
5.
Connect one end of the black jump lead
C preferably to a suitable jump start
connection point (earth connection) or
otherwise to a solid metal part that is
securely bolted onto the cylinder block,
or to the cylinder block itself of the ve-
hicle providing assistance → Fig. 186
3 .
6
. On the vehicle with the flat 12-volt bat-
tery, connect the other end of the black
jump lead D preferably to the jump lead
connection point (earth connection), or
otherwise to a solid metal part that is
securely bolted onto the cylinder block,
or to the cylinder block itself → Fig. 186
3 → .
7. Position the leads in such a way that
they cannot come into contact with any
moving parts in the engine compart-
ment.
Starting the engine
1. Start the engine of the vehicle providing
assistance and let it run at idle.
2. Start the engine of the vehicle with the
discharged 12-volt vehicle battery and
wait two or three minutes until the en-
gine is running “smoothly”.
If the engine does not start immediately,
switch o the starter aer about 10 sec-
onds and try again aer about 1 minute. If
the engine still does not start, seek expert
assistance.
Removing the jump leads
1. Before disconnecting the jump leads,
switch o the low beam headlights.
2. Turn on the Climate Control system or
the heating and fresh air system blower
and the rear window heating in the ve-
hicle with the discharged 12-volt vehicle
battery. This helps to minimise voltage
peaks which are generated when the
leads are disconnected.
3. When the engines are running, the jump
leads should be removed only in the or-
der D – C – B – A → Fig. 186.
4. Fit the cover to the positive terminal on
the 12-volt vehicle battery.
5. Go to a correspondingly qualified work-
shop and have the 12-volt vehicle bat-
tery checked.
Towing
Introduction
T
owing requires some experience, especial-
ly when using a tow rope. Both drivers
should be familiar with the technique re-
quired for towing. Inexperienced drivers
should not attempt to tow.
Make sure that no excessive pulling forces
occur and take care to avoid jerking move-
ments. When towing oroad, there is al-
ways a risk of overloading the anchorage
points.
Observe any legal requirements when tow-
ing.
