Apply Updates with the CLI
To apply updates via the CLI, perform these steps:
1) The update must be uploaded to the pool or server it will be applied to. This will assign a UUID
(identifier) to the update, and information about servers it is applied to will be tracked.
2) Once an update is uploaded to a pool or server, use the
patch-list
and
patch-param-list
commands to view information about the update.
3) Apply the update. It is recommended the
patch-pool-apply
command be used to do this. The update will apply to all servers in the pool. Alternatively, the
patchapply
command may be used to apply the update to one server in a pool. This may be useful when
applying the update and then restarting individual servers in the pool. Pools should not be left in
an inconsistent update state (where updates are installed on some servers and not on others).
Using the CLI procedures below require a basic knowledge of the xe tool. For information about
this, see the Administrator's Guide.
The update procedure is essentially the same for a single server or a pool scenario:
For a pooled scenario the update must be applied to all servers in the pool. Use the
patch-pool-apply
command.
For a single server, apply the
patchapply
command once for each host. These procedures are described below.
Apply Updates to XenServer* Host or Pool Using the CLI
Follow these steps to apply updates to a XenServer* host or to a XenServer host pool using the CLI:
1) Download the update to a local directory. Note the path to the downloaded update file. It is also
possible to download the update directly to an appropriate location on the server, e.g., /root,
using standard Linux* commands, but it is usually best to download it to a remote client.
2) Upload the update to the server or pool. An example CLI command to do this is:
xe -s my_server -u root -pw root_password patch-upload \
file-name=update_file b89249c7-feba-41c5-8838-911ded969add
Here, the -s”, “-u, and -pw options refer to the server, the username (usually root), and the
password. These would be omitted if running the command directly from the XenServer* host
console.
