11-4 In cold weather
• Do not apply the parking brake in extremely cold
conditions that could cause it to freeze up and
become impossible to release. In such condi-
tions, take the following steps:
1. Set the parking brake. Never park on a
slope.
2. In a manual transmission vehicle, select first
gear or reverse. In an automatic transmis-
sion vehicle, set the range selector lever in
the “P” position <other than FM65F> or “N”
position <FM65F>.
3. Block the wheels securely with chocks and
ensure that the vehicle cannot move.
4. Release the parking brake lever.
• On vehicles with air conditioner, operate the air
conditioner at least once a month to maintain its
functions even during the cold season when it is
not being used.
• Make sure that tire chains are installed properly
so that they do not become loose and interfere
with other vehicle parts while the vehicle is in
motion.
• Use triple chains corresponding to tire size.
CAUTION
• Do not put tire chains on the front wheels.
Use of winter tires is recommended.
• Make sure that the chains and their spring
bands are not excessively worn or otherwise
damaged.
• If you hear an abnormal noise while driving,
stop the vehicle in the nearest safe place and
check the tire chains.
• Driving on a dry road with chains installed
may damage the chains as well as the road
surface. Avoid doing so as far as possible.
• When fitting tire chains, refer to the instruc-
tions supplied with them.
