CHECKING THE BRAKE PADS FOR
WEAR
Carefully read page 25 (BRAKE FLUID -
recommendations), page 26 (DISC
BRAKES) and page 40
(MAINTENANCE).
Check the brake pad wear after the first
500 km (312 mi) and then every 2000 km
(1250 mi).
The wear of the disc brake pads depends
on the use, on the kind of ride and on the
road. Wear increases in case of use on
dirty or wet roads.
WARNING
Inspect the brake pads before each ride.
To carry out a rapid checking of the wear of
the pads, proceed as follows:
u Place the vehicle on the centre stand on
firm and level ground.
u Remove the brake calliper (1).
u Visually inspect the area between brake
disc and brake pads.
WARNING
If brake pads were allowed to wear to
the metal substrate, metal-to-metal
contact with the brake disc would lead
to rattle and the brake calliper sparking;
this would result in loss of braking and
brake disc damage, causing a
dangerous riding condition.
u Replace both pads, if friction material
thickness (even of a single pad) reduces
to about 1.5 mm.
WARNING
Contact an aprilia Authorised Dealer
for the replacement.
VERIFYING BRAKE SHOES WEAR
Carefully read page 40 (MAINTENANCE)
and page 27 (REAR DRUM BRAKE).
Check the brake shoes wear after the first
1000 km (625 mi) and then every 4000 km
(2500 mi).
To verify the rear brake shoes wear,
proceed as follows:
u Remove the real wheel, see page 49
(REAR WHEEL).
u Now check the friction material thickness
that shall never be lower than 1 mm. If
the minimum thickness allowed has
been reached, in case of operation
failures or damaged parts please contact
an aprilia Authorised Dealer for repair
operations.
