4 Testing using Spirotrac
4.1 Conducting a Spirometry Test
Testing may be done either in the sitting or standing position. If the standing position is
used, an appropriately shaped chair should be placed behind the subject so he/she
can quickly and easily be situated into a sitting position if he/she becomes light-
headed during the manoeuvres.
4.1.1 Checks to make before performing VC, FVC and Post Tests
1. The Vitalograph spirometer device should be connected correctly See relevant
device instructions).
2. Check that the correct device is selected:
a. Select Tools > Spirometer Device.
b. Select the appropriate device from the list.
3. Ensure that the accuracy of the device was checked recently.
4. Check that the parameters to be measured are selected as required:
a. Select Tools > Options and Parameters.
b. Select the parameters to be displayed/printed. Click OK.
c. For the full list of parameters, see the Parameter Definition section.
Note: All the results of tests are calculated and stored automatically so that the
user can later recall a test and display any additional parameters that have
been selected from this window.
5. Check that the correct posture is selected:
a. Select Tools > Options and General.
b. Select the appropriate Posture from the dropdown list. Click OK.
Note: When performing Spirometry testing, it is recommended by the joint
International ATS/ERS standard on Spirometry that the subject is in a seated
position for the duration of the test(s).
6. Check that the required end of test option is selected:
a. Select Tools > Options and General.
b. Select the appropriate End Test option. Click OK.
There are 2 end test options:
i. Automated: the test automatically ends once the ATS/ERS end of
test criteria has been achieved.
ii. Manual: the test continues until the user intervenes via the
Spacebar or Stop Test (if using COMPACT Expert) to end test.
7. Wash hands (operator and subject).
8. Fit a new Bacterial Viral Filter (BVF) to the flowhead for each test subject. The
use of a disposable nose clip is recommended.
9. Select a subject and ensure the required demographic information is entered.
(Reference Subject Management).
10. Instruct and demonstrate the test.
4.1.2 VC Testing
1. Once the required subject has been selected from the list, click on VC Test
button or select VC from Test menu.
