22 Introduction to the manual
Solar array Group of parallel-connected solar strings.
Solar array junction box Device that connects outputs of multiple solar source circuits
(strings) into a combined output circuit or circuits.
Solar cell Solar cell or photovoltaic cell is an electronic device that converts
solar energy into direct current electricity by the photovoltaic
effect. Assemblies of cells are used to make solar modules, or
photovoltaic arrays, which generate electricity.
Solar generator The total of all solar strings of a solar power supply system,
which are electrically interconnected.
Solar module Packaged interconnected assembly of solar cells that can be
installed as a single unit and connected to other panels to form a
solar array. Also called a solar panel or photovoltaic (PV) module.
Solar panel See “Solar module”.
Solar string Circuit of series-connected solar panels.
SPD Voltage surge protection device.
String inverter Low power solar inverter type which typically has one (or a few)
string input(s). Converts direct current and voltage from a solar
array to alternating current and voltage to the grid.
TL Transformerless, no galvanic separation between DC and AC
circuits.
