If the grind is too fine (looks like powder and feels like flour when rubbed bet-
ween fingers; more than 14 seconds until the coffee starts dripping), the water
will not flow through the coffee even when under pressure. The resulting espres-
so will be over extracted, dark in colour and bitter in flavour. The crema will be
stained. Use coffee powder with a somewhat coarser grind.
You can influence the flow rate of the coffee even by tamping the powder in the
filter basket with more or less pressure.
SELECTING THE APPROPRIATE FILTER BASKET
The flat 1 cup filter basket is designated for approx. 30 ml of espresso
(1 cup). Use the somewhat deeper filter basket for extracting approx. 60 ml (2 cups).
Additionally, a special pad filter basket is provided. All filter baskets are labelled by
symbols at the back
The amounts given for measuring the coffee powder are adapted to a level filling
of the provided measuring spoon. Do not press or heap the coffee powder in the
measuring spoon.
If you wish to prepare somewhat more espresso (e.g. for a mug of coffee), you
should use the 2 cups filter basket. However, you should fill this filter basket with
no more than 2 - 3 measuring spoons and brew no more than 60 ml.
Only use the given amount of coffee powder for each filter basket, because the
mesh of the filter basket is adapted to this amount to get the optimum pressure
and extraction (see: ‘Selection and Storage of Coffee’).
Use the pad filter basket exclusively for espresso pads. Always use only one sin-
gle espresso pad for each extraction.
Only use the designated espresso pads with the »Design Espresso Pro«. Usual
coffee pads are too large and not suited for espresso machines. The rim of the
espresso pad may not protrude the rim of the pad filter basket, to avoid leakage
of the water system during the extraction.
There are two spouts for coffee in the bottom of the portafilter. You may place
one or two cups under the portafilter. Two cups can be filled simultaneously.
SELECTION AND STORAGE OF COFFEE
Ground coffee will quickly loose a lot of flavour and taste. Thus, it is best to
grind directly before the extraction to maximise flavour. When purchasing coffee
beans, use bags with a ‘Roasted On’ date.
When purchasing pre-ground coffee, ensure that the coffee is suited for espresso
