Before installing the portafilter at the group head, run a short flow of water through
the group head. Place a heat-resistant vessel under the group head. Turn the selection
dial clockwise to start the brewing function and let the water flow for approx. 5
seconds. This will pre-heat and purge the group head. Turn the selection dial back
to the vertical position to stop the water flow. Installing the portafilter: Align the por-
tafilter handle with the INSERT position on the group head. Lift the portafilter to insert
it into the group head and rotate the handle towards the LOCK TIGHT position.
11. If required, empty your pre-heated cup and place it under the portafilter. You
may fill two cups at the same time. If you wish to, ensure that each cup is placed
under one of the spouts of the portafilter. For filling a single cup, ensure that both
spouts are directed into your cup.
WARNING: The group head and portafilter will be under pressure during
extraction. Do not remove or loosen the portafilter at the group head during operati-
on of the appliance. After switching off the brewing function, wait approx. 30
seconds until the appliance releases the pressure.
Thereafter, the portafilter may be
removed.
12. Starting the extraction: With the POWER button illuminated continuously, turn the
selection dial clockwise to the brewing function to start the extraction. The appli-
ance pressurizes the portafilter with hot water. After 14 seconds at the latest the
espresso should drip from the portafilter spouts.
Note:
As a guide, the espresso will start to flow after 9 14 seconds with the consisten-
cy of warm dripping honey (see: ‘Tips for Best Results’). A single espresso makes
approx. 30 ml, a double shot approx. 60 ml. If you wish to extract a larger volume
of coffee, you should add the appropriate amount of hot water via the hot water
function (see: ‘Preparing Long Black—Usual Coffee’). Otherwise, your coffee could
get bitter.
13. After achieving the desired amount of coffee, turn the selection dial back to the
vertical position to stop the extraction.
AFTER THE SHOT
WARNING: Immediately after brewing, the portafilter and group head will be
very hot and the system of the appliance is under pressure. Always wait, until the
appliance released the pressure (approx. 30 seconds), before loosening the portafil-
ter from the group head. Only touch the portafilter by the handle. If required, rinse
the portafilter with some cold water or wait until it cooled down, before touching any
metal parts of it.
