Install Fan and Flywheel
WARNING: Damaging Crankshaft and
Flywheel can Cause Personal Injury!
Using improper procedures to install the ywheel can
crack or damage the cranksha and/or ywheel. This not
only causes extensive engine damage, but can also cause
personal injury, since broken fragments could be thrown
from the engine. Always observe and use the following
precautions and procedures when installing the ywheel.
NOTE: Before installing the ywheel make sure the
cranksha taper and ywheel hub are clean,
dry and completely free of lubricants. The
presence of lubricants can cause the ywheel
to be over stressed and damaged when the
mounting screw is torqued to specication.
NOTE: Make sure the ywheel key is installed
properly in the keyway. The ywheel can
become cracked or damaged if the key is not
properly installed.
NOTE: Always use a ywheel strap wrench or
ywheel holding tool to hold the ywheel
when tightening the ywheel fastener. Do
not use any type of bar or wedge between the
cooling ns or ywheel ring gear, as these
parts could become cracked or damaged.
1. Install the appropriate key into the cranksha
keyway. Based on cranksha keyway style, use
either a woodru or straight key. Make sure key
is fully seated.
2. Install the ywheel onto the cranksha aligning
the keyway with the key. Be careful not to shi or
unseat the key.
3. Position the fan onto the ywheel, so the locating
pins drop into the corresponding recesses.
4. Install the fan mounting plate onto the fan,
aligning the four cutouts, followed by the heavy
at washer and hex ange screw. See
Figure 10-50.

Hardware to Flywheel.
5. Use a ywheel strap wrench or holding tool
to hold the ywheel and torque the hex ange
screw. For an M10 screw, torque to 66.5 N·m
(49 . lb.). For an M12 screw, torque to 88.0 N·m
(65 . lb.). See Figure 10-51.
