Fuel Lines
1. Check fuel lines for signs of wear, deterioration,
damage, or leakage. Replace if necessary.
2. Be sure fuel lines are routed properly, the connectors
latched and the lines secured with cable ties.
3. Replace all fuel lines every two years.
NOTE: See Chapter 4 for fuel line routing diagram.
Vent Lines
Check fuel tank, oil tank, crankcase, carburetor, battery
and transmission vent lines for signs of wear,
deterioration, damage or leakage. Replace every two
years.
Be sure vent lines are routed properly and secured with
cable ties.
Choke (Enricher) Adjustment - (500 Carb)
Verify free-play and smooth operation of the choke cable.
Adjustments to the choke can be made by turning the
cable adjustment in or out to gain the desired cable free-
play.
Compression Test
NOTE: 500 and 455 4-Stroke engines are equipped with
an automatic decompressor. Compression readings will
vary in proportion to cranking speed during the test.
Average compression (measured) is about
60-90 psi
during a compression test.
Smooth idle generally indicates good compression. Low
engine compression is rarely a factor in running condition
problems above idle speed. Abnormally high compression
can be caused by a decompressor malfunction, or worn or
damaged exhaust cam lobes. Inspect camshaft and
automatic decompression mechanism if compression is
abnormally high.
A cylinder leakage test is the best indication of engine
condition on models with automatic decompression.
Follow manufacturer’s instructions to perform a cylinder
leakage test. (Never use high pressure leakage testers as
crankshaft seals may dislodge and leak).
Engine Mounts
Inspect rubber engine mounts (A) for cracks or damage.
Check engine fasteners and ensure they are tight.
Make sure lines are not kinked or pinched
