Chapter 6. Operating system installation
This chapter provides an overview of the options that you have when installing an operating
system (OS) on the X6 family servers.
This chapter contains the following topics:
6.1, “Installing without a local optical drive” on page 186
6.2, “IBM ServerGuide” on page 189
6.3, “IBM ServerGuide Scripting Toolkit” on page 194
6.4, “Use of embedded VMware ESXi” on page 195
6.5, “Booting from SAN” on page 197
At the time of writing, the x3850 X6 and x3950 X6 servers were supported by following
operating systems:
Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2
Microsoft Windows Server 2012
Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 Server x64 Edition
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 with Xen for AMD64/EM64T
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 for AMD64/EM64T
VMware vSphere 5.5 (ESXi)
VMware vSphere 5.1 (ESXi)
vSphere 5.1 and 8-socket systems: VMware vSphere 5.1 has a fixed upper limit of 160
concurrent threads. This means if you are using an 8-socket system, with more than 10
cores per processor, you should disable Hyper-Threading.
Failing to disable Hyper-Threading in UEFI with 12-core or 15-core processors and
vSphere 5.1 will impact performance.
