4. MODEL FA5000 DISASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS
Special tools, fixtures, and equipment that are needed to disassemble and repair the
Model FA5000 are listed in Figure 901.
NOTE
: Numbers shown in parentheses in the following text and figures are
the Illustrated Parts List (IPL) figure number followed by the IPL item
number for a particular part; e.g., (1-100) for IPL Figure 1, Item 100.
For items listed in the parts list but not illustrated, the item number is
preceded by a “-”.
In addition to the IPL figure references, each disassembly instruction is accompanied with
an illustration showing specific assemblies or subassemblies to which the steps of the
procedure are related. The figures in this section contain the same figure/item number ref-
erences identifying the piece parts of the assembly as in the IPL figures; however, differ-
ent views of the assemblies may be provided to facilitate disassembly tasks.
NOTE
: All attaching parts such as cable assemblies, standoffs, screws,
washers, etc. that are not damaged, should be retained with the
chassis for reinstallation with the repaired LRUs. The FA5000 re-
placeable PWAs or modules consist of the Acoustic Beacon, Aircraft
Interface PWA, Main Processor PWA, and the Crash Survivable
Memory Unit (CSMU).
A. Underwater Locator Beacon Removal
(See IPL Figure 1, Item 150)
All installation and testing tasks concerning the ULB are covered in detail in the
90Day Underwater Locator Beacon Installation & Operation Manual, L3AP P/N:
165E554210 and the 90Day Underwater Locator Beacon CMM,
L3AP P/N: 165E554200.
The Underwater Locator Beacon (ULB) is approved to FAA TSO-C121b and
TSO-C142a and is equipped with a battery having a life expectancy same as the re-
placement date on the beacon. A new replacement beacon may be ordered, if need-
ed, directly from Aviation Products.
The beacon is recommended to be cleaned and tested every 24-months, refer to the
Clean Section 400, and Check Section 500 for details. As a general rule, the bea-
con should be removed from service on or before the replacement date printed on
the front label of the beacon. The battery installed in the beacon is field replaceable.
B. Crash Survivable Memory Unit (CSMU) Removal
(See Figure 302 or IPL Figure 1, Item 120)
The Model FA5000s CSMU is mounted to the top of the recorder chassis by (4) pan-
head sealing screws. It interfaces to the Main Processor (MP) PWA through the
