Handlingstatic-sensitivedevices
Donotopenthestatic-protectivepackagecontainingthenewpartuntilthedefectiveparthasbeenremoved
andyouarereadytoinstallthenewpart.Staticelectricity,althoughharmlesstoyou,canseriouslydamage
computercomponentsandoptions.
Whenyouhandleoptionsandothercomputercomponents,taketheseprecautionstoavoidstatic-electricity
damage:
•Limityourmovement.Movementcancausestaticelectricitytobuilduparoundyou.
•Alwayshandleoptionsandothercomputercomponentscarefully.HandlePCI/PCI-Expresscards,
memorymodules,systemboards,andmicroprocessorsbytheedges.Nevertouchanyexposedcircuitry.
•Preventothersfromtouchingtheoptionsandothercomputercomponents.
•Touchthestatic-protectivepackagecontainingtheparttoametalexpansion-slotcoverorother
unpaintedmetalsurfaceonthecomputerforatleasttwoseconds.Thisreducesstaticelectricityfrom
thepackageandyourbodybeforeyouinstallorreplaceanewpart.
•Whenpossible,removethenewpartfromthestatic-protectivepackage,andinstallitdirectlyinthe
computerwithoutsettingthepartdown.Whenthisisnotpossible,placethestatic-protectivepackageon
asmooth,levelsurfaceandplacethepartonthepackage.
•Donotplacethepartonthecomputercoverorothermetalsurface.

CAUTION:
Beforeyouopenthecomputercover,turnoffthecomputerandwaitseveralminutesuntilthe
computeriscool.
Beforeinstallingorremovinganyhardwarecomponentinyourcomputer,dothefollowingtoprepareyour
computerandremovethecomputercover:
1.Removeanymediafromthedrivesandturnoffallattacheddevicesandthecomputer.Then,disconnect
allpowercordsfromelectricaloutletsanddisconnectallcablesthatareconnectedtothecomputer.
2.Unlockanylockingdevicethatsecuresthecomputercover.See“Lockingyourcomputer”onpage31.
