As in any industrial environment, machines in a laundry that is not safely maintained can,
and sometimes do kill or maim personnel who come in contact with them. Regulatory author-
ities such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration in the USA and the European
Agency for Safety and Health at Work in the European Union hold the owner or his designated
representative (owner/management) ultimately responsible for a safe work environment. The in-
formation in this document can assist the owner/management in his responsibility to:
• recognize all foreseeable safety hazards and protect against these,
• ensure equipment can be safely used for the tasks needed,
• ensure equipment is adequately maintained,
• ensure that only appropriately trained and authorized personnel access equipment,
• provide the necessary information, instruction, and training,
• consult employees on safety issues of concern to them.

sponsible to ensure that the machinery remains safe for the life of the machinery and, with regard
to automatic machine motion, machine motion areas are fully guarded in compliance with USA
National Standard ANSI Z8.1 (see the following section).
