If engine speed does not incr ease when
the accel erator pedal i s depres sed, ther e
may be a problem somewhere in the el ec-
troni c engine c ontrol system. Stop the ve-
hicl e and cont act y our Toyota deal er or
take your v ehicl e careful ly, s ince the ve-
hicl e perfor mance wi ll be lower t han nor-
mal, t o your Toyota dealer as soon as
possi ble.
Even if the abnor mality in the elec troni c
engine c ontrol system is corrected during
low s peed driv ing, t he system may not
recov er unti l the engine is stopped and
the engi ne swi tch i s t urned to the “ACC”
or “LOCK” posit ion.
If your engine coolant temperatur e
gauge i ndicates over heati ng, if you ex-
perience a loss of power, or if you hear
a loud knocking or pinging noise, t he
engine has probabl y overheat ed. You
should follow thi s procedure...
1. Pull safely off the road, stop the v e-
hicl e and tur n on your emergenc y
flas hers. Put the trans miss ion in “ P”
(automat ic) or neutral ( manual) and ap-

If there is no coolant boiling over or
steam, l eave the engine running.
CAUTION
To hel p avoid personal inj ury, keep
the engine access hole cover closed
until there is no steam. Escaping
steam or coolant is a sign of very
high pressure.
3. Visual ly c heck to s ee if t he engine
driv e belt (f an belt) i s brok en or loos e.
Look for obvious c oolant leaks fr om t he
radiat or, hos es, and under the vehic le.
However, note t hat water dr aining from
the cooler is normal i f it has been
used.

When the engine i s runni ng, keep
hands and clothing away from t he
moving fan and engine drive belts.
4. If the engine drive belt is br oken or the
coolant is leaking, st op the engine i m-
mediatel y. Call a Toyota dealer for as-
sis tance.
5. If the engine dri ve belt i s O.K. and
there ar e no obvious leaks , you may
help t he engine cool down mor e quick ly
by running i t at about 1500 rpm for a
few minut es with t he accel erator pedal
light ly depres sed.
6. Check the coolant res erv oir. I f it i s dry,
add coolant to the reser voir while the
engine is runni ng. Fil l it about half full.
For t he coolant type, see “Coolant type
selection” in Section 7−2.
