“ABS” warni ng light
The li ght comes on when the engi ne
swit ch is turned to the “ ON” posi tion. If
the anti −lock brake system works properly,
the l ight t urns off after a few seconds .
Thereafter, if the system malfunctions, the
light c omes on again.
When the “ABS” warning light is on (and
the brake system warning light is off), the
anti−lock brake system does not operate,
but the brake system still operates con-
venti onally.
When the “ABS” warning light is on (and
the brake system warning light is off), the
anti−lock brake system does not operat e
so that the wheels coul d l ock up during
a sudden braking or braking on slippery
road surf aces.
If ei ther of the followi ng condit ions oc-
curs, this indicates a malf unction some-
where i n the components monitor ed by
the war ning l ight syst em. Cont act your
Toyot a deal er as soon as possible to
service the vehicle.

D The light comes on while you are driv-
ing.
A warning light tur ning on br iefl y duri ng
operati on does not indicate a problem.
PARKING BRAKE SYSTEM
Your vehicle has a parking brake system.
This type of brake system needs bedding−
down of the brake s hoes per iodic ally or
whenever the park ing br ake s hoes and/or
drums are repl aced.
Have y our Toy ota deal er perf orm the bed-
ding−down.
The brake pad wear i ndicator s on your
disc brakes give a w arning noise when
the brake pads are worn to where r e-
placement is requir ed.
If you hear a s quealing or sc raping noi se
while driv ing, have t he br ake pads
check ed and r eplaced by your nearest
Toyot a dealer immedi ately.
Avoid cont inuous driving wi th t he warning
noise.
Continuous driv ing without repl acing t he
brake pads wil l c ause expens ive r otor
damage and incr easing br ake pedal effor t
to get the same stopping dis tance.
