How to stop the engine
1. Apply the par king br ake fir mly and
place the s elector lever i n “P” posit ion.
2. Idle the engi ne for 5 mi nutes befor e
stoppi ng the engi ne. Then tur n the k ey
to t he “ACC” posit ion t o shut off the
engine.
3. Turn t he key while pushing to s et i t at
the “ LOCK” pos ition. Then pull out t he
key.
NOTICE
Before stopping the engine, idle the
engine approximat ely for 5 mi nutes. If
the engine is stopped suddenly with-
out i dling, the tur bocharger is f orced
to rotate without oil pressur e. This
may eli minate the necessar y oi l f ilm
and cause the bearing wear.
It is a good idea to do a s afety c heck
before s tarti ng out on a tr ip. A few min-
utes of c heck ing c an help ens ure saf e and
pleasant driving. Just a basic familiarity
with your vehic le is required and a careful
eye! Or, if you would li ke, your Toyota
dealer will be pleas ed to make this c heck
for you at a nominal cost .

If you make thi s check i n an enclosed
garage, make sure there is adequate
ventil ation. Engine exhaust i s poi son-
ous.
BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE
Outside the vehicle
Tires (spare i ncluded). Check the pres-
sure wi th a gauge and l ook c arefull y for
cuts , damage, or exces sive wear.
Wheel nuts. Make sure no nuts are miss-
ing or loose.
Fluid leaks. Af ter the vehi cle has been
parked for a whil e, c heck underneath for
leaki ng fuel , oil, water, or flui d. ( Water
drippi ng from the cool er aft er use is nor-
mal.)
Lights. Make s ure the headlight s, st op
light s, t ail li ghts, turn s ignal l ights and
other l ights are al l work ing. Chec k the
headlight aim.
Inside the vehicle
Jack and wheel nut wrench. Make sure
you hav e your jack and wheel nut wrenc h.
Seat belts. Chec k that the buckles loc k
secur ely. Mak e s ure the belts ar e not
worn or fray ed.
Instr uments and control s. Especially
make sur e the ser vic e reminder indi cator s,
inst rument lights , and defr oster are work-
ing.
Brakes. Make sur e t he pedal has enough
clear ance.
Spare f uses. Make sure you have spare
fuses . They s hould c over all the amperage
rati ngs designat ed on t he fuse box lid.
Batter y and cables. All the battery cells
should be filled to the pr oper level with
distilled water. Look for cor roded or loose
termi nals and a c rac ked case. Check the
cables f or good c onditi on and connec tions .
In the engine compartment
Coolant level . Make sure the cool ant lev-
el is correc t. (See Section 7−2forinstruc-
tions.)
