ANTI−LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM
The ant i−lock brake system i s designed
to help pr event lock−up of the wheels
during a sudden braking or braking on
slipper y road surfaces. This assists i n
providing directional stability and steer-

these circumst ances.
Effect ive way to press the ABS brake
pedal: When the ant i−lock brake system
funct ion i s in act ion, you may feel the
brake pedal puls ating and hear a noise.

The anti−lock brake system becomes op-
erati ve after the vehicle has accel erated
to a speed i n exces s of appr oxim ately 10
km/h (6 mph). It st ops operating when the
vehic le deceler ates to a s peed below
approxi mately 5 km/ h (3 mph).
Depress ing the brak e pedal on s lipper y
road surf aces suc h as on a manhole cov-

joint s i n a bri dge, et c. on a rai ny day
tends to act ivat e the anti−lock brake sys-
tem.
You m ay hear a c lic k or motor sound in
the engi ne c ompartment for a few seconds
when the engine is st arted or jus t after
the vehicl e begi ns to mov e. This means
that the anti−lock brake system is in the
self−check mode, and does not indic ate a
