Dynamic Positioning System
Volvo Penta Dynamic Positioning system (DPS) is a
function that aids holding a selected position and
compass heading by a GPS signal. The function is
intended as an aid, e.g. while waiting for a berth or for
a bridge to open.
From a legal and practical standpoint, the boat is under
way when the DPS is activated. The operator has the
same responsibility regarding supervision and
maneuvering when using DPS as when making way
through water without DPS. The operator must at all
times stay on the boat and attend the helm station
when DPS is activated. The operator needs to be
prepared to take over the total manual control of the
boat whenever it is necessary.
It is the operator's responsibility to inform passengers
of the risks. The operator must make sure no persons,
any other boat or object that can be affected by the
operation of the DPS function. When DPS is active,
precision is affected by wind, waves, current, GPS
signal strength, and other environmental and
mechanical conditions. For best performance and user
experience of the DPS functionality, it is recommended
that the boat is placed in a favorable heading with
regard to the wind, wave and current conditions.
Keep away from persons in the water and keep a safe
distance from any other boat or object when DPS is
active. The dynamic positioning system can be
affected by strong electromagnetic signals as created
by radio transmitters. Maintain a safe distance, with a
minimum of two boat lengths to any object.
Show consideration! When the DPS is active, it gives
rise to noise and heavy propeller wash that may annoy
those around. You are responsible for the wake from
your boat.
