Crankshaft assembly
Apply sealing compound in the groove on each side
of the front and rear main bearing cap (A). Apply the
sealing compound until it fills the groove completely
and is pressed into the column between the cap and
the cylinder block. Remove the sealant from the ar-
eas around the oil pan mounting holes. Install the oil
pan, operation 18A-03 within five minutes of apply-
ing the sealing compound.

Install the timing cover and the timing pulleys, see
section 15. Install the timing belt, operation 15A-04,
with the temporary markings on the belt aligned to
the marked teeth on the pulleys. Remove the tem-
porary markings and adjust the belt tension, opera-
tion 15A-03.

Check the fuel injection pump adjustment, opera-
tions 17A-03.

Install the cap of the timing cover, operation 15A-
01.

Install the crankshaft pulley, operation 14A-01.

Install the pulley for the water pump.

Install the starter motor, operation 22B-01.

After the engine is installed fill the oil pan to the cor-
rect level with an approved engine oil. Fill the en-
gine coolant system.

Check the axial clearance of the crankshaft and re-
place the thrust washer if necessary.

Remove the protective tubes from the connecting
rod screws.

Install the big end caps, see operation 13A-03.

Install the oil extractor pipe, oil screen and oil pan,
section 18.

Install the flywheel cover and the flywheel, see sec-
tion 21.

Crankshaft, inspection

Check the crankshaft for wear and damage. The
maximum permitted wear and ovality in the main
bearing journals and crankshaft journals is 0.03
mm.
Main bearing journals and crankshaft journals can
be worked to 0.3 mm undersize in diameter, see
Workshop Manual “Technical Data”. Special bear-
ings for under size are available.
The mating surface on the rear flange can be
worked to remove wear marks, if the seal has been
installed in both positions see Workshop handbook
“Technical data”.
