12.11 Checking the play of the steering head
Warning

– Adjust the steering head bearing play without delay.(Your authorized KTM workshop will be glad to help.)
Info
If the vehicle is operated for a lengthy period with play in the steering head bearing, the bearings and the bearing seats in the
frame can become damaged over time.
Preparatory work
– Deactivate the vehicle. ( p. 37)
– Fold the seat up. ( p. 63)
– Remove the KTM PowerPack. ( p. 96)
– Mount the covering cap. ( p. 64)
– Raise the motorcycle with a lift stand. ( p. 49)

Main work
– Move the handlebar to the straight-ahead position. Move the fork legs to and fro in
the direction of travel.
Play should not be detectable on the steering head bearing.
» If there is detectable play:
– Adjust the steering head bearing play. ( p. 59)
– Move the handlebar to and fro over the entire steering range.
It must be possible to move the handlebar easily over the entire steering range.
There should be no detectable detent positions.
» If detent positions are detected:
– Adjust the steering head bearing play. ( p. 59)
» If detent positions can still be detected:
– Change the steering head bearing.
Finishing work
– Remove the motorcycle from the lift stand. ( p. 49)
– Install the KTM PowerPack. ( p. 96)
– Lock the seat. ( p. 63)
