Anumberoffactorscanaffectthequalityofaradar
image,includingechoes,seaclutter,andother
interference.
Notallradarechoesareproducedbyvalidtargets.
Spuriousormissingechoesmaybecausedby:
•Sidelobes.
•Indirectechoes.
•Multipleechoes.
•Blindsectors.
•Sea,rain,orsnowclutter.
•Interference.
Throughobservation,practice,andexperience,you
cangenerallydetecttheseconditionsveryquickly
andusetheradarcontrolstominimizethem.
SideLobes
Sidelobepatternsareproducedbysmallamountsof
energyfromthetransmittedpulsesthatareradiated
outsidethenarrowmainbeam.Theeffectsofside
lobesaremostnoticeablewithtargetsatshort
ranges(normallybelow3nm),andinparticularwith
largerobjects.Sidelobeechoesformeitherarcson
theradarscreensimilartorangerings,oraseriesof
echoesformingabrokenarc.
