8.2 Systematic Setup of Programs
8.2.1 Setup of Automatic Load Program 0
Except for initial load and maximum load values, program 0 does not permit any load
settings from the operator. Individual load increments are not programmable. The load-
ing process is determined automatically by the ergometer during the ergometry pro-
cess and is only dependent upon the circulation response of the patient.
Program 0 is intended for critical patients whose circulatory condition is unknown. It is
therefore necessary that the parameters be accordingly conservative. Establish initial
load and alarm parameter values such that even very weak patients will not be over-
stressed. Select blood pressure measurement intervals as short as reasonable in or-
der to guarantee the best possible surveillance over the patient’s circulatory condition.
The program will calculate three standard load increments of 5, 10 or 25 watt within
which the patient can reach the pre-set heart rate. The resulting protocol data will en-
able you to subsequently classify the patient into one of the patient groups for which you
have a specific program (1-8).
Even with program 0 it is possible to make temporary alterations to any parameter for
the specific ergometric process. The flowchart below should clarify the ergometric pro-
cess for program 0.

Continuous doctor’s attention is also required for patients who are
stressed with automatic program 0 since the circulatory response is not
continuously monitored. Parameters can change abruptly between indi-
vidual blood pressure measurements without the system being able to
appropriately counteract.
