5.2 Completing the maintenance task
5.2.1 Updating the system board BIOS via USB stick
I This procedure does not apply to the Japanese market. Please follow the
update procedure intended for the Japanese market.
Usually, the procedure for updating the BIOS of the PRIMERGY TX100 S3 Core
Edition Server involves the usage of the BIOS ASP package. However, in case
of problems with the operating system or after the system board has been
replaced, it might be necessary to update the BIOS using an attached USB
stick.
Due to the Headless concept, customers usually will not have a monitor,
keyboard or mouse attached to their servers. Therefore, it will not be possible
to change the boot sequence in order to boot from the USB stick holding the
new BIOS version (see also section "Note on boot sequence settings" on
page 68). By default, the USB stick is not the first device within the boot
sequence. Therefore, it is necessary to use a workaround in order to
successfully update the BIOS via USB stick:
Ê Remove any DVD or CD from the DVD drive.
Ê Terminate all applications and shut down the server.
I If the server does not shut down properly, press and hold the On/Off
button for five seconds, until the server switches off.
Ê Disconnect the AC power cord from the system.
Ê Unlatch and remove the side cover as described in section "Removing the
side cover" on page 43.
Ê Remove all SATA cables from the hard disk drives.
I This step is necessary in order to ensure that the Headless server will
not boot from any other boot device ahead of the USB stick.
Ê Close the side cover and lock it in place as described in section "Installing
the side cover" on page 56.
Ê Reconnect the AC power cord.
Ê Connect the USB stick containing the BIOS update to the Headless server.
