Configuring the DHCPv6 server
Overview
A DHCPv6 server can assign IPv6 addresses, IPv6 prefixes, and other configuration parameters to
DHCPv6 clients.
IPv6 address assignment
As shown in Figure 97, the DHCPv6 server assigns IPv6 addresses, domain name suffixes, DNS
server addresses, and other configuration parameters to DHCPv6 clients.
The IPv6 addresses assigned to the clients include the following types:
• Temporary IPv6 addresses—Frequently changed without lease renewal.
• Non-temporary IPv6 addresses—Correctly used by DHCP clients, with lease renewal.

IPv6 prefix assignment
As shown in Figure 98, the DHCPv6 server assigns an IPv6 prefix to the DHCPv6 client. The client
advertises the prefix information in a multicast RA message so that hosts on the subnet can
automatically configure their IPv6 addresses by using the prefix.
