Backlapping
DANGER
TO AVOID PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH:
D Never place hands or feet in the reel area
while the engine is running.
D When backlapping, run engine at idle speed
only.
D While backlapping, the reels may stall and
then restart.
D Donotattempttorestartreelsbyhandorfoot.
D Do not adjust reels while the engine is
running.
D If a reel stalls, stop engine before attempting
to clear the reel.
D Reel motors are connected in series: rotating
one moto r causes rotation in other motors.

1. Position the machine on a level surface, lower the
cutting units, stop the engine and engage the parking
brake.
2. Raise the operator seat to access hydraulic mow
manifold.
3. Locate the reel speed control and backlap lever on
the hydraulic mow manifold (Fig. 11). Rotate the reel
speedcontroltoposition“1”andthebacklaplevertothe
R (backlap) position.
4. Makeinitial reeltobedknifeadjustmentsappropriate
forbacklappingonallcutting unitswhichareto beb ack-
lapped.
5. Start engine and run at low idle speed.
6. Use joystick on the control console to engage the
cutting units.
IMPORTANT: To prevent damage to the reel, do not
rotatethe backlapleverfromthe backlappositionto
the mow position while the engine is running.
7. Apply lapping compound to cutting unit blades with
a long handle brush (see Special Tools in this chapter)
(Fig. 12). Never usea short handled brush to applylap-
ping compound.

Reels may stall while backlapping. Do not
attempt to restart reels by hand or touch reels
while backlapping. Stop engine and turn reel
speed adjustment knob one position toward
”9.”

8. If reels stall or become erratic while backlapping,
stop backlappingby disengagingthe PTO withthe joys-
tick. Once the reels have stopped, move the reel speed
selector knob one position closer to “9.” Resume back-
lapping by engaging the PTO with the joystick.
