OPERATION
Shallow Water Operation
Excessive trim/tilt angle during
operation can cause the propeller
to raise out of the water and cause
propeller ventilation and engine
over-revving. Excessive trim/tilt
angle can also damage the water
pump and overheat the engine.
When operating in shallow water, tilt
the outboard motor up to prevent the
propeller and gear case from hitting
the bottom (see page 87). With the
outboard motor tilted up, operate the
outboard motor at low speed.
Monitor the cooling water check hole
for water discharge. Be sure that the
outboard motor is not tilted so high
that the water intakes are out of the
water.
If an excessive amount of throttle is
used when operating in forward gear,
the outboard motor will return to the
transom angle adjusting rod. (G type)
Multiple Outboard Motors
On boats equipped with more than
one outboard motor, all motors
normally operate at the same time.
If one or more motor(s) is stopped
while the other(s) is running, put the
stopped motor in “N” (neutral) and
tilt it up so its propeller is above the
water's surface.
If the propeller of the stopped motor
is left in the water, it may turn as the
boat moves through the water,
causing a reverse flow of water from
the exhaust side. This reverse flow
will happen if the stopped engine's
propeller is in the water, its gearshift
is in “R” (reverse), and the boat is
moving forward. Reverse flow can
cause an engine malfunction.
