CAUTION
D Observe the legal maximum speeds
for trai ler towing.
D Slow down and shift down before
descending steep or long downhill
grades. Do not make sudden down-
shift s whi le descending steep or
long downhill grades.
D Avoid holdi ng t he brake pedal down
too l ong or t oo f requently. This
could cause the br akes to overheat
and result in reduced braking effi-
ciency.
Improv ing f uel economy is eas y—j ust tak e
it easy. It wil l help make your vehi cle l ast
longer, too. Her e are some speci fic tips
on how t o save money on both f uel and
repair s:
D Keep your tires inflat ed at the cor-
rect pressure. Underinflat ion caus es
tir e wear and wastes fuel. See Secti on
7−2 for ins truc tions .
D Do not car ry unneeded weight in
your vehicl e. Exc ess weight puts a
heavier load on the engine, caus ing
greater f uel consumpt ion.
D Avoi d lengthy warm−up idling. Once
the engi ne is running smoothly, begin
driv ing—but gently. R emember, howev-
er, t hat on cold winter days this may
take a lit tle longer.
D Automatic transmissi on—Put the
shift lever i nto “D” when engine
braking i s not required. Driving with
the shif t lever i n a pos iti on other than
“D” wil l reduce the fuel ec onomy. (For
details , see “ Automatic t ransmis sion” in
Secti on 1−6.)
D Accelerate slowly and smoothly.
Avoid jac krabbi t star ts. Get int o high
gear as quick ly as poss ible.
