Before making these checks, make sure
you hav e followed the corr ect s tart ing pro-
cedure given i n “How to st art the engine”
in Sect ion 3 and that you have suff ici ent
fuel.
If the engine is not turni ng over or i s
turni ng over too slowly—
1. Check that the batt ery ter minals are
tight and cl ean.
2. If the battery terminals are O.K., s witch
on the interior l ight.
3. If the l ight is out, dim or goes out
when the star ter is c ranked, the batt ery
is disc harged. You may try jump s tart-
ing. See “ (c) Jump st arting” for fur ther
instructions.
If the light is O.K., but the engine st ill wil l
not start , it needs adjus tment or repai r.
Call a Toyot a dealer or quali fied r epair
shop.
NOTICE
Do not pull− or push−star t the ve-
hicle. Your vehi cle may suddenl y
move when t he engi ne star ts, and
may d amage i tself or cause a col li-
sion. Al so the catalytic converter may
overheat and become a f ire hazar d.
If the engine t urns over at its nor mal
speed but will not start —
1. If you are starti ng the engine that has
died f rom an empt y tank, you may
have needed to bleed the f uel system
before crank ing the engi ne. See “( b)
Bleeding t he fuel system” for further
instructions.
2. If the fuel system is O.K., but the en-
gine st ill wi ll not s tart , it needs adj ust-
ment or r epair. Call a Toy ota dealer or
qualif ied repair shop for as sis tance.
Pump
If you run out of fuel and the engine
dies, the engine may not restart aft er
refuel ing. In such case, oper ate t he
primi ng pump until you feel more re-
sistance.
