Wir in g. Look for damaged, loos e, or dis-
connect ed wires.
Fuel lines. Check the l ines for leaks or
loose connec tions .
AFTER STARTING THE ENGINE
Exhaust system. Lis ten for any l eakage.
Have any leaks f ixed immediatel y. ( See
“Engine exhaus t cauti ons” in Sect ion 2.)
Engine oi l level. Stop the engine and
check the dips tic k wit h the vehic le parked
on a level spot . (See Section 7−2for
instructions.)
WHILE DRIVING
Instr uments. Mak e sure the speedomet er
and gauges are working.
Brakes. In a safe place, c heck t hat the
brakes do not pull to one side when ap-
plied.
Anything unusual? Look f or loose parts
and leaks. Li sten for abnormal noi ses.
If ev eryt hing looks O.K., set your mind at
ease and enjoy your tr ip!
D Always s low down i n gust y c ross winds.
This will allow you much better control.
D Drive sl owly ont o curbs and, if pos-
sibl e, at a r ight angle. Av oid dr ivi ng
onto hi gh, s harp−edged object s and
other road hazards . Failure to do so
can lead to severe tire damage such
as a tire burs t.
Driv e slowl y when pass ing over bumps
or tr avelling on a bumpy road. Other-
wise, the impact could cause s evere
damage to the tires and/or wheel s.
D When parking on a hill, turn the front
wheels unt il they touc h t he cur b so
that the vehicle will not roll. Apply the
parki ng brake, and plac e the tr ansmis-
sion in “P” (automat ic) or fi rst or re-
vers e (manual). I f necess ary, block the
wheels.
D Was hing y our vehi cle or driv ing through
deep wat er may get the brakes wet. To
see w hether they are wet, chec k t hat
there i s no traffic near you, and then
press the pedal li ghtly. If y ou do not
feel a normal brak ing forc e, the brakes
are pr obably wet. To dr y them, dr ive
the vehi cle cautious ly while l ightly
press ing the br ake pedal with the par k-
ing brake appli ed. If they st ill do not
work safely, pull to the side of t he road
and call a Toyota dealer for as sis tanc e.
CAUTION
D Before driving off, make sure the
parking brake is ful ly rel eased and
the parking brake reminder l ight is
off.
D Do not l eave your vehicle unat-
tended whil e the engi ne is r unning.
D Do not rest your foot on the brake
pedal whi le dr iving. It can cause
dangerous over heating, needless
wear, and poor f uel economy.
D To drive down a long or steep hill,
reduce your speed and downshif t.
Remember, if you ride t he brakes
excessively, they may over heat and
not work properly.
