CAUTION
BATTERY PRECAUTIONS
The bat tery produces flammabl e and
explosive hydrogen gas.
D Do not cause a spar k f rom the bat-
tery with tools.
D Do not smoke or light a match near
the battery.
The electr olyte cont ains poisonous
and corrosive sulfur ic acid.
D Avoid cont act with eyes, skin or
clothes.
D Never ingest el ectrol yte.
D Wear protect ive safet y glasses when
working near the battery.
D Keep chi ldren away from the bat-
tery.
EMERGENCY MEASURES
D If electrol yte gets in your eyes,
flush your eyes wi th cl ean wat er
immediatel y and get immediate
medical attent ion. If possibl e, con-
tinue to appl y wat er with a sponge
or cloth whil e en r oute to the medi-
cal offi ce.
D If el ectrolyt e gets on your ski n,
thoroughl y w ash the contact area. If
you feel pain or burning, get medi-
cal attenti on immediatel y.
D If elect rolyte gets on your clothes,
there is a possibility of its soaking
through to your ski n, so immedi ate-
ly take off the exposed clothi ng and
foll ow t he pr ocedure above, if nec-
essary.
D If you accident ally swal low el ectro-
lyte, drink a lar ge quantit y of water
or mi lk. Get emergency medi cal
attenti on immediately.
The electricity stored in the battery will
disc harge gradually ev en when the vehic le
is not in us e, due to natur al di schar ge
and the draining effects of cer tain el ectr i-
cal appli ances. I f the vehi cle i s left for a
long t ime, t he batt ery may disc harge, and
the engi ne may be unable to s tart. (The
batter y rechar ges automati call y dur ing
driv ing.)

Check the battery for corroded or loose
termi nal connecti ons, cracks, or loose
hold−down clamp.
a. If the batt ery is corroded, wash it off
with a solut ion of warm water and bak-
ing s oda. Coat the outside of the t ermi-
nals with grease to prevent f urther cor-
rosi on.
b. If the terminal connect ions are loose,
tighten t heir c lamp nuts —but do not
overt ighten.
c. Tighten t he hold−down clamp only
enough t o k eep t he batter y fi rmly in
place. Overti ghtening may damage the
battery case.
