those it ems that are relati vely eas y f or an
owner to perfor m. As explai ned in Sec tion
6, t here ar e st ill a number of items that
must be done by a qualifi ed t echnic ian
with spec ial tools .
Utmost c are should be taken when work-
ing on your vehi cle t o prev ent ac cident al
injur y. Here are a few precaut ions that
you shoul d be espec iall y c areful t o ob-
serve:
CAUTION
D When t he engine i s runni ng, keep
hands, clothi ng, and tools away
from the moving f an and engi ne
drive belts. (Removi ng rings,
watches, and ties is advisable.)
D Right af ter drivi ng, the engine
compartment —the engine, radiat or,
exhaust manif old and power steer-
ing flui d reservoir, et c.—wil l be hot.
So be careful not to touch them.
Oil and fluids may also be hot .
D If the engine i s hot, do not r emove
the radiator cap or l oosen t he drain
plugs to prevent burning yourself.
D Do not l eave anyt hing that may
burn easi ly, such as paper or r ags,
in the engine compartment.
D Do not smoke, cause sparks or al-
low open flames around fuel or t he
battery. Their fumes are flammable.
D Be extremely cautious when wor k-
ing on the batt ery. It contains poi-
sonous and cor rosive sulfur ic acid.
D Do not get under your vehicle with
just the body j ack support ing it. Al-
ways use automot ive jack st ands or
other solid support s.
D Use eye protect ion whenever you
work on or under your vehicl e
where you may be exposed to f lying
or falling material, fluid spray, etc.
