The fol lowing i nstructi ons f or checking
tir e i nflati on pressure should be o b-
served:
D The pressur e should be checked only
when the tires are cold. If your ve-
hicl e has been park ed f or at leas t 3
hours and has not been dri ven for
more than 1.5 k m or 1 mile s ince, you
will get an accurate cold tire inflation
press ure reading.
D Always use a t ire pressur e gauge.
The appearanc e of a tir e c an be mis-
leading. Besides, tir e inf lation pressur-
es that are ev en jus t a few pounds off
can degrade ride and handling.
D Do not bl eed or reduce tir e i nflati on
pressure after dr iving. It i s normal for
the tir e inflati on pressur e to be higher
after dr ivi ng.
D Be sure t o reinstal l the t ire valve
caps. Without t he valv e caps, dirt or
moist ure could get int o the valve cor e
and caus e air leak age. If t he c aps
have been los t, hav e new ones put on
as soon as poss ible.
CAUTION
Keep your tires properly inflated.
Otherwi se, the foll owing conditi ons
may occur and cause an accident re-
sulti ng in death or serious injuri es.
Low tire pressure (under inflat ion)—
D Excessive wear
D Uneven wear
D Poor handli ng
D Possibility of blowouts from an
overheated ti re
D Poor seali ng of the tire bead
D Wheel deformat ion and/or tir e sepa-
ration
D A greater possibility of tire damage
from road hazards
High tir e pressure (overinf lation) —
D Poor handli ng
D Excessive wear
D Uneven wear
D A greater possibility of tire damage
from road hazards

CHECKING YOUR TIRES
Check the tire’s tread f or t readwear in-
dicator s. If the indicat ors show, repl ace
the tir es. The location of treadwear in-
dicators is shown by the “TWI ” or “D”
marks, et c., mol ded on the si dewall of
each tire.
The t ires on your Toyota have bui lt−in
treadwear indic ators to help y ou k now
when the tir es need repl acement. When
the tread depth wears to 1.6 mm (0.06
in.) or less, the indicat ors wi ll appear. If
you c an see the indic ator s in two or more
adjacent grooves, the ti re s hould be r e-
placed. The lower t he tread, the higher
the ris k of ski dding.
