Troubleshooting Starting Problems
STARTING THE ENGINE
SYMPTOM POSSIBLE CAUSE
Engine switch OFF.
Shift lever not in NEUTRAL position.
Blown fuse.
Loose battery connector.
Out of fuel.
Vent knob not open.
Primer bulb not squeezed.
REMEDY
Emergency stop switch clip is not set.
Plug cap is not installed properly.
Engine flooded.
Turn engine switch key START.
Set shift lever in NEUTRAL position.
Replace fuse.
Connect battery cable securely.
Have your authorized Honda outboard motor
dealer charge battery.
Supply fuel.
Open vent knob.
Squeeze primer bulb to supply fuel.
Clean and dry spark plug.
Start using emergency starter rope.
Install plug cap securely.
Set emergency stop switch clip.
Weak battery.
Starter motor doesn’t turn over (Electric
starter type)
Starter motor turns but the engine
doesn’t start. (Electric starter type)
Pull the starter rope slowly until a
resistance is felt, then pull briskly.
