3-2 Alpha-Numeric System
Check out the alpha-numeric system using the Keyboard and A/N Controller procedures in the CT 9800 Display

This section assumes that the S/140 power supplies are operating normally (refer to Section 3-1 for details).
1. Turn OFF the S/140 POWER switch (Illustration 4-3-1).
2. Turn the S/140 POWER switch back ON, and carefully observe the LEDs on the S/140 front console of both
Main and Expansion Chassis (Illustration 4-3-3).
3. The PWR and RUN LEDs should light and the RUN LED should stay lit for about 1 second before going out.
4. The following should be displayed on the alpha-numeric monitor at the Operator’s Console:
OK
! 000000
!
This indicates that the self-test was completed and no problems found.
5. If the self-test was not completed normally (printout of Step 4 is not visible on A/N Monitor):
a. Verify that the Diagnostic Test Plug on the backplane is in the RUN position, i.e., the RUN label is up.
b. Verify Expansion Chassis is properly connected, i.e., MEM OK MODULE installed on main chassis Slot
M1B.
c. The S/140 Manual Volume 1, Part 1, Section 1-4, contains more details of the power-up sequence and
Expansion Chassis connections.
d. Verify that the alpha-numeric terminal was operating normally in LOCAL mode as checked out in Section
3-2 and that the A/N Controller was returned to its On Line operating mode.
e. Chapter 5 of DG’s Field Engineer’s Maintenance Manual, located in Part 2 of the S/140 Manual Volume
#1, contains troubleshooting hints for failure of the self-test.
