SHIFT CABLE
INSPECTION
Shift cable adjustment may be necessary if symptoms
include:
• No gear position display on instrument cluster
• Inability to engage into or stay in a gear
• Excessive gear lash (noise)
Inspect shift cable, clevis pins, and pivot bushings and
replace if worn or damaged.
SHIFT CABLE REMOVAL / INSTALL AND
ROUTING
REMOVAL
1. Open hood to gain access to shift cable
2. Remove the clip and washer retaining the shift cable
to the shift lever

. Disconnect cable end from the
lever.
3. Loosen the jam nut

, and remove the cable from the
bracket.
4. Remove the center floor cover, refer to Floor / Rear
Fenders page 11.9.
5. Remove the shift cable from the retainers.
6. Tilt the box to access the cable where attached to the
transmission linkage. Remove the clip and washer
attaching the cable to the linkage

7. Loosen the jam nut holding the cable to the Shift
Cable Bracket

8. Gently pull the cable towards the rear of the vehicle to
remove the cable from the vehicle.
IMPORTANT
Pay close attention to the shift cable routing while
removing so that cable can be routed correctly on
installation.
INSTALLATION
1. Feed the cable from the rear of the vehicle towards
the front of the vehicle.
2. Attach the Cable to the shift handle
3. Position the cable in the Shift Cable bracket and
tighten the jam nut.
4. Install the shift cable to the transmission linkage.
5. Position the cable in the Shift Cable Bracket and
tighten the jam nut.
6. Perform any cable adjustments needed at this time.
