General
To effectively use the 434 Oscilloscope, the operation
and capabilities o f the instrum ent must be know n. This
section describes the operation of front-panel controls,
gives sim plified and general operating inform ation, and lists
some basic applications fo r this instrum ent.
OPERATING VO LTA GE
General
The 434 can be operated on all nominal line voltages
from 100 volts to 240 volts AC, 50 to 400 hertz. It can also
be operated from a 100 volts to 250 volts DC power source.
No range switching or selection is necessary.
I CAUTION <
__
<
This instrum ent is designed fo r operation from a
pow er source w ith its neutral at or near earth
(ground) p o te ntial (fo r both A C and DC pow er
sources) w ith a separate safety-earth conductor. I t is
no t intended fo r operation from tw o phases o f a
multi-phase AC system, or across the legs o f a
single-phase, three-wire AC system.
The 434 is designed to be used w ith a three-wire AC
power system. If a three- to tw o-w ire adapter is used to
connect this instrum ent to a tw o-w ire AC power system, be
sure to connect the ground lead o f the adapter to earth
(ground). Failure to com plete the ground system may allow
the chassis of this instrum ent to be elevated above ground
potential and pose a shock hazard.
When operating the instrument from an external DC
power source, polarity of the external voltage is
unim portant. Again, it is imperative to complete the ground
system to prevent accidental elevation of the instrum ent
chassis and resultant shock hazard.
Operating Temperature
The 434 requires very little air circulation for proper
operation. A thermal cu tou t in the instrum ent provides
thermal protection and disconnects the instrum ent power if
the internal temperature exceeds a safe operating level.
Power is autom atically restored when the tem perature
returns to a safe level.
The 434 can be operated where the ambient tem perature
is between —15cC and +55°C. The maxim um operating
temperature must be derated 1°C for each 1000 feet of
altitude above 5000 feet. This instrum ent can be stored in
am bient temperatures between —55°C and +75"C. A fter
storage at temperatures beyond the operating lim its, allow
the chassis temperature to come w ith in the operating limits
before power is applied.
Operating Position
The handle of the 434 can be positioned fo r carrying or
as a tilt-stand for the instrum ent. To position the handle,
press in at both pivot points (see Fig. 2-1) and turn the
handle to the desired position. Fourteen positions are
provided for convenient carrying or viewing. The instru
ment can also be set on the rear feet fo r either operation or
storage.
Rackmounting
Complete inform ation fo r m ounting the 434 in a cabinet
rack is given in Section 6 of this manual.
