12.15 Checking the play of the steering head bearing
Warning

– Adjust the steering head bearing play without delay. (Your authorized KTM workshop will be glad to help.)

If the bike is ridden with play in the steering head bearing, the bearing and the bearing seats in the frame can become dam-
aged over time.
Preparatory work
– Raise the motorcycle with the lift stand. ( p. 57)

Main work
– Move the handlebar to the straight-ahead position. Move the fork legs to and fro in
the direction of travel.
No play should be noticeable in the steering head bearing.
» If there is noticeable play present:
–
Adjust the play of the steering head bearing. x ( p. 66)
– Move the handlebar to and fro over the entire steering range.
The handlebar must be able to move easily over the entire steering range. There
should be no perceptible detent positions.
» If detent positions are noticeable:
–
Adjust the play of the steering head bearing. x ( p. 66)
– Check the steering head bearing and replace if required.
Finishing work
– Remove the motorcycle from the lift stand. ( p. 57)

– Loosen screws 1 and 2.
– Loosen and retighten screw 3.
Guideline
Screw, top steering head M20x1.5 12 Nm
(8.9 lbf ft)
– Using a plastic hammer, tap lightly on the upper triple clamp to avoid strains.
– Tighten screws 1.

Screw, top triple clamp M8 20 Nm
(14.8 lbf ft)
– Tighten screw 2.
