Back End Processor (BEP)
Introduction
The Back End Processor is a computer, designed specially for
the use in the ultrasound scanners made by GE.
Signal flow and processing
The Back End Processor receives the digitized ultrasound data
from the CRX board in the Front End.
It performs beam forming, process the Color Flow, Doppler,
M-Mode and 3D/4D data calculations.
It also performs scan conversion to pixel domain, and drives the
Ultrasound system’s monitors.
To be able to handle all the tasks, the BEP has two graphics
adapters, where one is used for beam forming and other
data-intensive tasks, and the other is used to drive the displays.
Location of the Back End Processor (BEP)
The BEP is located on the left side, inside the Vivid E80/E90/
E95, behind the Left Side Cover.
BEP description

The following main parts are located inside the EMC enclosure:
• main board with Intel’s Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge
architecture and connectors for extension cards, hard disk,
front end, front module and Pat I/O
• power supply (PSU board) for generation of local voltages
• two graphical adapters
• hard disk drive
• I/O board on the rear of the BEP
