72 IBM Eserver i5 and iSeries System Handbook
IBM considers sub-capacity licensing to be a strategic offering within the
on demand portfolio. Sub-capacity licensing enables the licensing of the
on demand portfolio. Sub-capacity licensing enables the licensing of software
products for use on less than the full capacity (in processors) of the machine
when used within a logical partition. IBM currently offers sub-capacity
licensing for selected software, including WebSphere Application Server
running on iSeries.
IBM intends to announce sub-capacity licensing terms and conditions for
additional middleware products, such as WebSphere Application Server and
DB2 Enterprise Server Edition, on other platforms such as AIX 5L, i5/OS,
OS/400, and Linux on POWER. IBM also plans to deliver license
management tools to assist you in tracking and reporting your software
assets to take advantage of these flexible pricing models.
Future iSeries management environment: IBM plans to deliver an
integrated management environment with services such as partitioning,
hardware virtualization, and workload management for OS/400, AIX, and
Linux applications on an IBM Eserver. The new management environment
will integrate OS/400, middleware, and enhancements from research and
development to deliver dramatically enhanced partitioning, optimized asset
utilization, and on-demand resource allocation for heterogeneous operating
environments.
Statement of Direction: Closed
As part of the iSeries announcements made in May 2004, IBM fulfilled the
commitment of the following direction with the availability of i5/OS V5R3 in
August 2004:
Support AIX on iSeries: IBM plans to further extend the self-managing
systems initiative of the IBM autonomic computing initiative with
self-optimizing and configuring capabilities that include native support for AIX
in logical partitions alongside OS/400 partitions on the iSeries product line.
This would allow customers to leverage a broader range of application
environments including OS/400, Windows, Linux, and now AIX on a single
IBM Eserver. With this capability, a common set of resources can be
managed and shared across a total customer solution, made up of
applications targeted to different operating environments. This extends the
self-optimization capabilities of iSeries to meet the needs of customers in a
simple, low-cost, and efficient manner.
As part of the iSeries announcements made in June 2003, IBM fulfilled the
commitment of the following direction:
