Marine Installation Manual 2022-03 4-109
4 Ancillary Systems
4.11 Engine room ventilation
X62DF-S2.0
4.11.3 Air intake quality
Air intake quality can vary depending on the circumstances of the vessel. For ex-
ample, suction air is expected to have a dust content of 0.5 mg/m
3
or higher if a
vessel is carrying dusty or dust creating cargoes, such as iron ore and bauxite, or
if it is often in port, trading in coastal waters and desert areas. In these cases, the
air must be filtered before it enters the engine (see Table 4-16).
Dust filters
The necessity for installing a dust filter and the choice of filter type depends
mainly on the concentration and composition of dust in the suction air. The
normal air filters fitted as standard to the turbochargers are intended mainly as si-
lencers but not to protect the engine against dust. If the air supply to machinery
spaces has a dust content exceeding 0.5mg/m
3
, there is a risk of increased wear
to the piston rings and cylinder liners.
Table 4-16 Guidance for air filtration
All filters’ surfaces must be sized correctly to ensure full functionality of the fil-
tration. This is dependent on the engine’s maximum power output as shown in
Figure 4-67,  4-110.
NOTE
WinGD advises to install a filtration unit on vessels regularly trans-
porting dust creating cargoes, or trading in areas of atmospheric dust.

ships routinely trading along desert coasts.
