7 Engine Emissions
7.1 Exhaust gas emissions
X62DF-S2.0
BSGC and BSPC depend on the engine type and rating. The project-specific values
are available in the
GTD.
CF
is a non-dimensional conversion factor between fuel consumption and CO
2
emission
s. CF has different values depending on the fuel type. The values can be
found in resolution
MEPC.308(73).
The
methane slip
is a project-specific value and is a function of the engine type
and power. WinGD can provide guidance values for methane slip upon request.
The GWP for the CH
4
is a value estimated over a period of 20 or 100 years. For
the
CO
2
emissions calculation, WinGD suggests using a value of 28 which is the
reference value for 100 years. The GWP factor is not yet implemented in the of-
ficial regulations but may be considered for more accurate emissions calcula-
tions.
For engine operation in diesel mode, CH
4
values are irrelevant and
CO
2
-equivalent
can be calculated with the following formula:

7.1.4 PM emissions
Regulation 14 of MARPOL Annex VI specifies the limits for
PM emissions,
which are mainly related to unburned combustion residuals and fuel quality. An ap-
proximate reduction of 65
%
in PM emissions is achieved by X-DF engines com-
pared to diesel engines, as LNG is considered a clean fuel and the combustion
follows the lean burn Otto cycle.
A further reduction of about 10
%
is achieved by
X-DF2.0 engines compared to X-DF. The
iCER system, with internal exhaust gas
recirculation, contributes to further reduction in PM emissions (as shown in
Figure
7-1,  7-1
).
7.1.5 iCER diesel Tier III mode
This X-DF2.0 engine is available with the option of Tier III compliant operation
by use of the iCER system (see iCER operating mode options,  1-1). This engine
operation mode uses MGO pilot fuel (with maximum 0.10% m/m sulphur). To
achieve Tier III compliance in diesel mode operation, exhaust gas recirculation
is used to reduce the NO
x
emissions.
