Industrial automation profile
This port profile isavailable in Digi devicesthat support Industrial Automation (IA) and the Modbus
protocol. It has serial port settingsappropriate for the Digi Connect WANIA’suse in IAapplications. It
allowsyou to control and monitor variousIAdevices and PLCs. Serial portsfor Digi Connect WANIA
devices areset to use thisport profile by default. The default settingsfor the Digi Connect WAN IAand
in thisport profile is sufficient for most IAapplications. If you need to change the settingsfrom the
defaults, use the “set ia” command, documented in the Digi Connect®Family Command Reference.
Basic serial settings
Thebasic serial port settings must match the serial settings of the connected device. If you do not
know thesesettingsconsult thedocumentation that came with your serial device. These serial
settings may be documented as 9600 8N1, which meansthat the device isusing a baud rate of 9600
bits per second, 8 data bits, no parity, and 1 stop bit.
When using RealPort (COMport redirection) these settingsare supplied by applications running on the
PCor server, and the default valueson your Digi device server do not need to be changed.
Thepossible settingsare as follows:
n
Description: Specifiesan optional character string for the port which can beused to identify
the device connected to the port.
n
Baud Rate: Select the baud rate value for the serial device.
n
Data Bits: Select the data bits value for the serial device.
n
Parity: Select the parity for the serial device.
n
Stop Bits: Select thestop bit value for theserial device.
n
Flow Control: Select the flow control value for the serial device.
Multiple Electrical Interface (MEI) serial settings
For Digi devices with Multiple Electrical Interface (MEI) switch-setting capability, these settings
configure MEI settingson a per-port basis, and display the current MEI settingsfor the port. MEI
settings includethe typeof electrical interface (EIA-232 or EIA-485), the number of differential wires
used for communication, and whether termination and biasing resistors areused.
n
EIA-232: Setsthe electrical interface for the serial port to EIA-232. This is the default setting.
This interface usesindependent wires to transmit and receive data, which allowsdata to be
sent and received between devicessimultaneously.
