3.4.5 Connecting a Serial Cable
Scenarios
The rear panel of the server provides a standard DB9 serial port (three-pin serial
port), which works as the system serial port by default. You can set it as the iBMC
serial port using the iBMC CLI.
The serial port can be used as:
● The system serial port to monitor the status of the operating system (OS).
● The iBMC serial port for debugging and fault locating.
Prerequisites
Conditions
No special conditions are required for this operation.
Data
You have determined the cabinet number and installation position for the server
to be connected.
Tools
ESD wrist strap or ESD gloves: used to prevent ESD damage

Hardware
Serial cable with an RJ45 connector
Procedure
Step 1 Connect the serial cable.
Securely connect the RJ45 connector on the serial cable to the serial port on the
server. See Figure 3-14.
