GENERALINFORMATION
Tractorballasting
Forsufcienttractionandmaximumperformance
inheavydraftoperations,andtocounterbalance
rear-mountedequipment,weightshouldbeaddedtothe
tractorintheformofliquidballast,castironweights,
oracombinationofboth.Onlyenoughweightshould
beaddedtoprovidegoodtractionandstability.Adding
moreweightthanisneededresultsinunnecessarysoil
compaction,increasedrollingresistance,andhigherfuel
consumption.
NOTE:Whenaddingweighttothetractor,tirepressures
mayneedtobeincreased.SeeWheels-Tirepressure
inthismanual.
Frontendballastmayberequiredforstabilityandsteering
controlwhenweightistransferredfromthefrontwheels
totherearwheelsasanimplementisraisedbythetractor
three-pointhitch.
Asageneralguide:
Ballastthetractor(lessimplement)sothatapproximately
one-thirdofthetractorweightisonthefrontwheels.For
optimumtraction,tractorsequippedwithfront-wheeldrive
shouldbeballastedsothat40-45%ofmachineweight
isonthefrontwheels.
Whenarearmountedimplementisraisedtothetransport
position,thefrontwheelreactionshouldbeatleast20%
oftractorweight.
Addadditionalfrontendballastasrequiredforstability
duringoperationandtransport.Tractorfrontendballast
maynotalwaysmaintainsatisfactorystabilityifthetractor
isoperatedathighspeedonroughterrain.Reducetractor
speedandexercisecautionundertheseconditions.
Whenusingfront-mountedequipment,addweighttothe
rearaxletomaintaingoodtractionandstability.Front-
mountedequipmentvariesinweight.Refertoequipment
manualforballasting.

Theweightinglimitationsthatfollowarelimitationsonly.
Theydonotimplythatthetractorshouldbeweightedto
attaintheweightsgiven.Useonlyenoughweighttoob-
taingoodperformance.
