CHECKING THE ENGINE OIL
LEVEL AND TOPPING UP
Carefully read page 46 (LUBRICANTS),
page 63 (MAINTENANCE) and page 109
(LUBRICANTS CHART ).
Check the engine oil level whenever
starting the vehicle.
CHECKING
NOTE Place the vehicle on firm and flat
ground.
◆ Place the vehicle on its centre stand.
WARNING
The engine and exhaust components
become hot when the engine is running
and will stay hot for some time after the
engine has been stopped. Wear
insulating gloves before handling these
components or allow for the engine and
exhaust system to cool down before
proceeding.
◆ Stop the engine and allow it to cool so
that the oil in the oil pan can drain and
cool off.
NOTE Failure to observe the following
precautions risks mistaking the engine oil
level..
◆ Unscrew and remove th engine oil filler
plug (2) and check the oil level with the
dipstick.
MAX = maximum level;
MIN = minimum level.
The difference between the ≈MAX∆ and
≈MIN∆ marks is about 18.3 inc
3
(300
cm
3
).
The correct level is just around the ≈MAX∆
mark.
CAUTION
Do not fill beyond the “MAX” and do not
allow the level to drop below the “MIN”
mark, as this can seriously damage the
engine.
◆ Top up if necessary.
TOPPING UP
◆ Unscrew and remove the engine oil filler
plug (2).
◆ Pour a small quantity of oil into the filling
hole (3) and wait about a minute for the
oil to flow into the oil pan.
◆ Check the oil level and top up again if
necessary.
◆ Add small amounts of oil at a time until
the recommended level is reached.
CAUTION
After topping up, put back the plug (1)
in the correct position.
◆ Screw in and tighten down the engine oil
filler plug (2).
WARNING
Do not use the vehicle if insufficiently
lubricated or with contaminated or
improper lubricants, as this will wear
moving parts and cause irreparable
damage to the engine.
