5 SAMPLE HANDLING AND PATIENT TESTING

5.2 Sample Preparation
5.2.1 Whole Blood Samples
Collect blood in a heparinized syringe, a capillary tube or a ComfortSampler.
Whole blood samples should be analyzed as soon as possible, ideally within 5 minutes after
collecting the sample. For brief storage of up to one hour, the sample should be iced.
CAUTION:
Wholebloodsamplesrequiretheproperamountofanticoagulanttopreventthe
samplefromclotting.DONOTuseanticoagulantssuchasEDTA,citrate,oxalate,
etc.Useonlyheparinsaltsasanticoagulants.
CAUTION: Sedimentationofredcellsmayoccurrapidlyinwholeheparinizedblood.
ThismayaffectyourtHbresults.Makesureyoursampleisfreeoftrappedgas
bubblesandcompletelymixed,byrollingthesyringebetweenthepalmsofyour
handsandinvertingendoverendforatleastoneminute,justpriortosample
introduction.
