71. Draining the Cooling System
1.
Engine coolant drain plug
- Tractors with Coolant Filter
With
the
engine cool, drain
and
re
lill
the
cooling
system
and
install a new filler.
as
follows:
•
WARNING:
Coolant should
be
kept
off
the skin. Adhere to the precautions out-
lined on the antifreeze container.
Open the radiator drain cock, Figure
70
and
allow
the coolant
to
drain. Unscrew and remove the
drain plug, Figure
71
and drain the coolant
from
the engine block. Remove the radiator cap
at
this
stage
to
increase the drainage rate.
NOTE: Some models may have a drain cock in
place
of
the plug shown in Figure
71.
If
so, open
the cock
to drain the coolant from the block.
Aficr draining, unscrew
and
remove
the
coolant
filter
and
flush the cooling system via
the
radiator
filler.
After flushing, close the drain cock(s) and/or
re-
place thccnginecoolantdrdin plug. Clean the scal-
ing
face
of
lhe
filter manifold
and
install a
new
fil-
ter.
Do
not ovcrtighlen.

IMPORTANT: Anti-leak additives should
be
avoided. The clogging properties
of
these.
addi-
tives could affect the performance
of
the filter.
Refill the cooling system via the radiator filler
tube
using a 50% solution of clean water
and
antifree7.c.
Check
the
coolant level is
flush
with
the indicator
at the bottom
of
lhe filler tube (sec Operation
S).
NOTE:
To
avoid trapping air in
the
system,fiU the
radiator as slowly as practicable thereby allowing
any air pockets to disperse.
Start and
run
the engine
lo
circulate
I.he
coolant.
Stop
the
engine
and
top up the radiator with the
same 50% solution
of
clean water and antifreeze.
NOTE: The coolant level may drop as it is
pumped around the cooling
.Yy.ttem.
A
WARNING:
The
cooling
system
oper-
a.
ates under pre.tsure
which
i.f
controlled
by the radiator cap. It
is
dangerous to remove the
cap
while the .fystem
is
hot.
Use
a thick cloth
and
turn the cap slowly to the first stop
and
alf.ow.
the pressure to escape before fully removing
the
cap.
Coolant should be kept
off
the skin. Adhere to the
precautions outlined
on
the antifreeze and inhibi-
tor containers.
IMPORTANT: It is essential that a Ford New
Holland approved cap is
u.ted.
lfthe
original cap
is mislaid or
da.maged,
obtain a repl.acementfrom
your Ford New Holland dealer.
If
the
engine is not going
to
be
operated immedi-
ately following this
filler change,
run
the
engine
for
one hour
to
ensure that
the
chemical inhiblor
within the filter is dispersed into lhc cooling sys-
tem.
Allow the engine to cool
and
make a final check to
ensure that the coolant level is satisfactory.
