3.3 Feeding the original
The original can be fed in either of the following two ways. Be sure to position the original correctly according
to the type of original being copied.
3.3.1 Loading the original into the ADF
0 Do not load originals that are bound together, for example, with paper clips or staples.
0 For details on the types of originals that can be loaded into the ADF, refer to "Originals" on page 7-22.
0 Do not load more than 80 sheets or so many sheets that the top of the stack is higher than the , mark,
otherwise an original misfeed or damage to the original or machine may occur. However, a original that
exceeds 80 sheets can be scanned in separate batches. For details, refer to "Scanning the original in
separate batches ("Separate Scan" setting)" on page 3-11.
0 If the original is not loaded correctly, it may not be fed in straight or an original misfeed or damage to
the original may occur.
0 If the original is loaded in any orientation other than with the top of the original toward the back of the
machine, be sure to select the original orientation. For details on selecting the original orientation, refer
to "Selecting the original orientation (Original direction settings)" on page 3-25.
1 Place the original in the original feed tray in the order to be scanned with the side to be scanned faces
up.
– Load the original pages so that the top of the original is toward the back or the right side of the
machine.
2 Adjust the lateral guides to the size of the original.

Document Feed Method Features
Using the ADF By using the ADF, a multi-page original can be fed automatically, one page at a
time. This feed method can also be used to automatically scan double-sided orig-
inals.
Using the original glass Place the original directly on the original glass so that it can be scanned. This meth-
od is best with books and other originals that cannot be fed through the ADF.
