ADJUSTING
THE
BRAKES
Before attempting to make an adjuztment, the wheels must be raised clear of the
ground by'placing the machifie on
its
stand or stands
as
the case may be.
Front
Brake. To adjust the brake shoes closer ro the bralce drum, turn the knurled
thumb nut (See Fig.
42)
in
a
clockwise direction. The brake should be
set
so that
when
it
is
fully applied the lever
is
just clear
of
the handlebar.
By
this adjustment,
the rider will be able to exert the maximum amount of grip on the lever. After
making an adjustment, spin the wheel to ensure that the brake shoes are not binding
on the brake drum.
Rear Brake. The adjustment is made by turning the knurled thumb nut (See
Fig.
42)
at the rear end of the brake operating rod in a clockwise direction. After
adjusting spin the wheel to ensure that the brake
is
not binding. On the Rigid
